Be grateful.
It is a privilege to be here. More a privilege to be human.
Listen to Keith Urban sing “God’s been good to me”.
Listen to Van Morrison sing “When will I learn to live in God”.
Life itself is glorious. Being able to think is a gift, to walk, talk, scratch and itch are all gifts. Every single thing is a gift.
And life is good. If you know yourself as fortunate, be it wealthy, living in a clean place, in a non-violent relationship, having food to eat, air to breath. If you know you are privileged, then simply know it. Recognise it.
Do not attach good or bad to it. It is simply what it is. Recognise it. In the morning sun, in the ground under your feet, see how much of the privilege you can recognize. Be mindful.
Guilt is pointless. There is no point in attaching either ‘bad’ or ‘good’ to your lot. It is neither, it is both, it simply is. Your only responsibility is to try and be in it as fully as possible. Life your life, the life you are living, fully.
Practice trusting this life you are living. Practice recognizing and acknowledging the privilege. The wonder of seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, feeling, thinking.
Just that, every day to begin with. Just once a day. Experience gratitude.
Then maybe twice a day. Practice. Get better at it.
Then maybe when you have a coffee, smoke a cigarette, drive in your car, eat at a restaurant.
Then maybe when you walk through a door, sit down, go to bed.
Then maybe when you eat, when you walk, when you sit.
Practice.
Practice.
Practice.
Until you become unconsciously skilled. Until you are, without consciously trying, grateful. And through that gratitude you are empowered, enlivened. Filled up with the joy and the wonder of the gifts that surround you
